Introduction
Garawa is an Australian Aboriginal language which was spoken in the Gulf of Carpentaria region close to the Northern Territory / Queensland border.
The materials here are drawn from the recordings and linguistic notes taken by Elwyn Flint, a UQ researcher who conducted extensive language surveys throughout Queensland in the 1960s. In the case of Garawa, Flint worked with the last surviving speakers, and as such, this material contributes towards the linguistic documentation of the language which is now extinct.
These materials contain linguistic descriptions, as well as elicitation materials in both textual and audio formats. Both are available for download for further analysis.
The Garawa language material was initially prepared by Naomi Keith and Mary Laughren and subsequently revised by Baden Hughes. This work was funded by the following grants:
